"We offer events, music, [and] art shows for people to come together." - Julie Balkman, owner

When Wake the Dead opened in 2008, owner Julie Balkman knew that her coffee shop would be so much more. Apart from making all kinds of coffee and food, hosting a vast number of beers, and selling jewelry and art, Wake the Dead is a thriving venue. Hosting San Marcos’ events and art is no hassle, as the location boasts a stage, two large rooms and a courtyard. The stage opened in 2009 so Wake the Dead's focus on the community could expand, said Balkman.

Wake the Dead hosts the monthly range of events shown above, as well as even more private and public events. For example, the coffee house hosts belly dance events, as well as science cafes, in which a recognized scientist visits and engages the audience in a particular topic. One can also reserve private parties, such as birthday parties, graduation parties, and baby showers. In addition,Wake the Dead organizes holiday festivals such as the free Kids Halloween Festival, which is growing larger and more successful every year.

The Love Me Tenders is Wake the Dead's very own employee music act, whose sound is a mixture of "revival, doo wop, fuzz, and reverb," according to their Facebook site. It's members are Mitch D. White, Dana Dacy and Chris Truan. The Love Me Tenders Wake the Dead debut is Nov. 29 for Eric Morales' Art Reception, and then they will play again Dec. 3.

Wake the Dead is proud of their connection with the San Marcos community. If you wish to host an event or perform/showcase art and music, email Wake The Dead’s manager, Julie Balkman at coffeewench@austin.rr.com.
